My Natural Deodorant Journey Part 3 ft. Primal Pit Paste Review

Welcome back to yet another installment of Nicolette Tries Out Natural Deodorants and Doesn’t Really Like Them! I’m your host, Nicolette.

My most recent attempt at a natural deodorant is yet another crowd favorite, known for it’s B.O.-nixing sans aluminum capabilities: Primal Pit Paste Stick in Thyme & Lemongrass ($10.95). I picked this one up at my local Whole Foods during a grocery trip. It comes in a stick form or a little jar; I went with the stick, assuming it would be easier, but now I’m not so sure it was the right choice.

Hats off to this product- it works very well. I can put this on in the morning, work all day, go to the gym for an hour after work, walk my pup in the summer humidity when I get home and still smell totally fresh by the end of the day. The scent I chose was thyme and lemongrass, which smells natural, is strong enough to mask any B.O. and manages to not be overpowering.

This deodorant contains baking soda, which prevents odor, arrowroot powder, which prevents too much sweating, and coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax, which all work to soothe the skin. The ingredients are all organic and each stick is hand-crafted, so ten bucks is sort of a steal for this effective, all-natural product.

While it is a feat in and of itself to have found a natural deodorant that doesn’t wear off a few hours in, there are a couple problems with it.

First, application can be difficult. The stick doesn’t really rub into skin well until it warms up from your body heat, so it takes a few minutes to get it to smooth on. This process can sometimes irritate my skin. Purchasing the jar option instead might make this a lot easier- if I could just scoop some up and rub it in myself with the warmth of my fingers, I wouldn’t have such an issue.

That leads me to the other- bigger– issue: irritation. I’ve found that after using this continually for about two weeks, the skin under my arms begins to get rough and irritated. I attribute this problem to the baking soda. Full disclosure: I have very sensitive skin, so this might not be a problem for everyone.

My little hack for that is this: Every few days, I switch it up to Tom’s Natural Deodorant for a day or two (or three) to give my skin a break and allow it to calm, then I switch back.

Primal Pit Paste is the right choice for anyone who is active and wants to switch to a natural deodorant. It will keep you dry and odor-free all day long no matter how much you exercise…just be sure to buy the jar over the stick and keep an eye on the state of your skin during use.
