Lip Balm Favorites

Lip balm has been a necessity in my life since before I can remember. One of my nervous habits is to absently pick at my lips, so the only thing that saves me from horrendously chapped lips is my obsession with lip balms. I apply lip balm every night before I go to sleep, every morning when I finish brushing my teeth and then during the day as needed, depending on if I’m wearing a lipstick or lip gloss- even if I am, I usually apply lip balm beneath it to keep my lips moisturized and soft.

Over the years, my collection has grown from one or two to five that I use on a daily/weekly basis. Here’s a rundown of my favorites and what I use them for.

Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm, $3.30

This is the original lip balm that started it all. Vitamin E moisturizes, beeswax conditions and peppermint oil creates a pleasant tingle on your lips. Put it all together and you’ve got an incredible product that keeps lips healthy and moisturized. Burt’s Bees gives you the most bang for your buck and it lasts for months at a time. You can’t beat it.

Crazy Rumors HibisKiss Natural Lip Color in Coral, $4.99

While not exactly a lip balm, this formula applies smoothly and it’s jam-packed with oils and Shea butter to keep lips hydrated. When I want a pop of color without all the hassle of lipstick, I smooth this onto my lips, quick and easy, to get both the color and the moisturizing effect I crave.

Glossier Coconut Balm Dotcom Universal Skin Salve, $12

The benefits of this balm (for lips or any dry area on your skin) balance out the price tag. This is the most expensive option on my list, but it’s worth it. This lip balm is extremely hydrating, long-lasting and it stays in place even if you wear it to bed. The key ingredients list is overflowing with organic and natural items that sooth skin: castor seed oil, beeswax, lanolin, cupuacu fruit extract and rice bran and rosemary leaf extracts. Plus, I’m a sucker for that delicious coconut scent!

Kiehl’s Eucalyptus Lip Relief, $8

If your lips are in some serious trouble (I’m talking cracked and chapped, usually in the midst of mid-winter blues), this fantastic treatment will nurse them back to health in no time. When the winds are blistering cold in February and my usual lip balms aren’t doing the trick, I whip this bad boy out to soothe and heal my lips.

EOS Smooth Sphere Lip Calm in Sweet Mint, $3.29

Last but not least (well, actually, it is sort of least on this list), we have EOS (Evolution of Smooth). This brand blew up in popularity a few years back with everyone sporting their own colorful lip balm sphere in their purses. Then, earlier this year, people began suing the company because of irritation, rashes, blistering, etc. I’ve never had that problem myself. This all-natural option, packed with Vitamin E and Shea butter (are you seeing a trend here?) is usually buried in my purse in case of emergencies, but it’s never my top choice.

Let me know any other crowd favorites that I should get- I’m always up for more lip balms!
